The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce Supports Federal Action on the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline.

The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce has been actively advocating for the completion of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline. On May 23, five representatives from Saskatchewan, including Steve McLellan, CEO of the Saskatchewan Chamber, and Clayton Veresh, Chair of the Saskatchewan Chamber’s Board of Directors, participated in a “Day on the Hill” in Ottawa to show support for the pipeline project. The representatives met with Ministers, Senators, and Opposition members, including Minister Ralph Goodale, Minister Jim Carr, and Andrew Scheer, Leader of the Official Opposition.

“In a recent survey of our membership, 96% of respondents supported the completion of the pipeline and felt the federal government should use every reasonable tool at its disposal to ensure the project is completed,” said Steve McLellan, CEO of the Saskatchewan Chamber.

“Today we see that the federal government has taken action, and while it is less than ideal, at least a decision has now been made. The fact that the federal government has assumed ownership of the project shows weakness in the federal approval process, but they have also demonstrated a commitment to the completion of this pipeline. We applaud both Kinder Morgan and the Government of Canada for working together to ensure Western oil will get to international markets.

“We will see both long and short-term impacts on Saskatchewan’s economy. Saskatchewan workers will build portions of the pipeline, with EVRAZ providing much of the steel. We will also see some of the pressure on our supply chain reduced,” said McLellan.

The Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce represents the interests of over 10,000 businesses across the province through the Chamber network.
